Obituary for Mary "Gina" Hegger

December 2, 1954 - July 1, 2020

Mary Regina “Gina” Hegger (Shaughnessey) -- It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Gigi in the early morning of Wednesday, July 1st, 2020, at the age of 65.

Gina was surrounded by her family until the very end. Her final days were filled with love, laughter, tears, jokes, music, and episodes of “I Love Lucy.” She passed away peacefully at home, next to the love of her life, Gary.

Gina’s love was unconditional, and she cared more about others than herself. She was funny, witty, and lived life to the fullest, especially after receiving her diagnosis. She fought bravely to the very end and exceeded all expectations.

Gina felt so fortunate to have all three of her adult children living in the same neighborhood. For years, we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy many Sunday meals, after-dinner games, and celebratory drinks together. She cherished her precious Sunset Beach trips and getting to sit by the ocean. When she wasn’t at the beach, you could often find her floating on her raft in the pool, reading a good book.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert & Betty Shaughnessy, her sister, Kathryn Hope, and her sister-in-law, Kathy Shaughnessy. Gina is survived by her spouse of 45 years, Gary Hegger, and her three children, Lindsey Hegger (Rodney) Huneycutt, Justin Hegger, and Shannon Hegger (Ryne) Purvis. She will be forever remembered by her loyal support dog, Bay, her granddaughter, Kiley Hegger, her brother, Steve Shaughnessy, as well as her loving extended family in St. Louis, MO, and Arlington, TX. In addition, she will be missed by many special friends, including her wonderful neighbors in South Point.

Gina was a devoted animal lover - treating them all as if they were her own. She had a special place in her heart for the many beloved pets she cared for throughout her life. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Chapman’s Dachsund Rescue, 1200 Chambers Rd, York, SC, 29745.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 9th, 2020 at 1 pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy, Charlotte, NC 28277.  Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel.  To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Mary "Gina" Hegger please visit our
